Happy New Years everybody! Last couple of weeks we've been in half-assed mode because of the holidays but fear not! We're now well back in full-assed mode. To begin with, from this Monday to next, here is the master list of ANIME ON TV!!! Click on "Read More" for the whol shebang.
Some of you may have been way too young to remember this but there was a time 10 years ago that when you went to a comic / anime convention, you would be excited whenever a company like AnimEigo licensed a show everybody loved like Kimagure Orange Road or Viz would announce that a new VHS copy of Ranma 1/2 would have 3 episodes instead of the usual two.
Those were the days. All the way through the early years of 2000, any of the big anime companies announcing a new license made the anime panels fill to the brim and out the door. Then came the ready and available streaming and downloadable anime kill anime clubs and destroy the DVD market, as well as anime convention company license announcements.
Still, in the slow demise of ADV, who originally licensed and dubbed and re-released half a dozen times over their Neon Genesis Evangelion series, Funimation acquired the rights to the new movie New Evangelion:1.0 You Are (Not) Alone. This also suggests that the other 3 sequels will be coming to America sometime soon. For thoes who liked the ADV dub, I wouldn't be too surprised if they got the same voice actors to dub this new film, despite the fact that the new movie was almost a shot for shot remake of the first few episodes.
Lastly, if you haven't seen the 1995-1996 Neon Genesis Evangelion series (first: WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!?) then you better put that AT THE TOP OF YOUR NETFLIX QUE!!!!!!!!!
Welcome to a new chapter in the New Comic Wednesday Universe! In the Holiday spirit, I thought I'd revel in racy humor. Becareful! This particular story has been BANNED IN 3 COUNTRIES!!! You've been forwarned. Otherwise HAPPY DAMN NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!!! Oh yeah, don't get too drunk and stay away from angry people who are and try to stay off the roads after 10pm, that's when the rookie drinkers get on the road.
And it's about time too. Short of D.Gray Man, this franchise has some great potential for American consumers. The character designs and backdrop of the series is like if Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish) got his hands on an anime studio. It's from Studio Bones, so you know what excellent animation and storytelling you're getting yourself into. I can't wait to own this!
The story revolves around the Shinigami Weaponry Vocational School, a university run by Death himself for living weapons and their human masters. One of the human students, Maka Alban, is paired with Soul Eater, a boyish figure whose true form is a scythe. Maka, Soul Eater, and the rest of their class learn how to collect souls while plying their arts against the witches, werewolves, and zombies of the world. A trailer will be available on the official North American website.
It's been a busy year for Funimation. They've bought out virtually the entire ADV catalog, picked Geneon's carcass clean and have been racking up hit after hit. So, to end out the 2008, I'll list the newest additions for Funimation.
First, from Fullmetal Alchemist director Seiji Mizushima and adapted by FMA script supervisor Shou Aikawa, comes Oh! Edo Rocket,Oh! Edo Rocket is the story of Seikichi, a young fireworks maker living in Edo (Tokyo) in 1842.New government rules have outlawed fireworks, but Seikichi keeps on testing new more powerful sky rockets and the day after seeing aliens in a forest late at night a strange girl knocks on his door and asks him to build her a rocket that will reach the moon.
Also, the 26-episode ninja-themed Nabari no Ou anime that aired in Japan earlier this year. This is one of the crown jewels of Funimation’s latest string of announcements. It's about Emo Bi-shounen Ninja Rokujo Miharu, who finds out he is the living ninja bible... hilarity ensues.
Funimation also released a press statement that it just picked up the 4th in the line of Slayer TV series. Slayers Revolution is told through two 13-episode arcs and follows an original storyline. If you don't know what Slayers is, you probably aren't an old-school anime fan. Pick it up, it's stupid and ridiculous but it's certainly fun!
Crunchyroll has been doing pretty well for itself by having multiple anime companies allowing their products to be streamed online. This seemingly helps when companies like Funimation release both half season DVDs and full season DVDs. The newest additions to the Crunchyroll's roll call are Net Ghost PIPOPA and The Tower of Druaga: The Sword of Uruk.
